History of the Reynard 95I Illustration

Deneba Software artist Dave Rumfelt describes the history and techniques
used in the Reynard - Valvoline - Cummins 95I IndyCar illustration that
was featured in Canvas 5 brochures and advertising:
After working out an agreement with The Valvoline Company to reproduce a
cut-away drawing of their IndyCar we contacted the original artist, Tony
Matthews, and he sent us the line art he created of the car. The line art
was scanned and placed on its own layer and the parts were drawn on a separate
layer.
The drawing on the left was one of the early "working" files.
The scan of the original airbrush art is visible on one layer. The red lines
are where I've outlined parts of the car already are on a separate, visible
layer. When all the parts are outlined, I use the same method of coloring
that was used on the F-40 and the Harley-Davidson. The drawing on the right
shows the same area of the illustration in completed form.
Like the Harley-Davidson illustration, this was originally envisioned as
a teal car, and it appears in teal on the Canvas 5 brochure. Later, I changed
the colors over to a bright red and added Canvas 5 racing graphics. The
#5 Valvoline IndyCar that was the basis for the illustration is currently
being raced by Robby Gordon in the CART/IndyCar series.
If you get by a racetrack and see a red Canvas 5 car, that's Deneba CEO
and co-founder Joaquin de Soto's Formula Ford 2000. If you download the
file, you'll see a copy of the red car with the 5 logo on the forward monocoque.
Good luck in the '96 series!
